Magic VLSI

Tim Edwards (Open Circuit Design)

Magic VLSI

An integrated-circuit layout editor originally developed at UC Berkeley and still actively maintained. It checks design rules (DRC) while you draw, extracts the netlist and parasitics for simulation, and performs basic routing. It reads and writes GDS, CIF and LEF/DEF and is widely used together with open process design kits for chip fabrication. It suits teaching VLSI design and open-source analog and digital chip projects. The interface is command- and keyboard-driven and quite different from commercial tools, so expect a learning period.
