Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering has the most mature free ecosystem, and in several areas the open tools simply are the standard. The open CFD and finite element solvers are used in research and industry alongside commercial packages, not as a poor substitute for them.

Modelling is well covered: parametric modellers for parts and assemblies, code-based modelling where every dimension is a real parameter, and tools for meshes and point clouds. Analysis comes in three separate layers — solver, mesher, and post-processor — that connect to each other. That is the key difference from a commercial suite: here you assemble the workflow instead of receiving it ready-made.

The real cost is learning time, not money. An open solver expects you to understand what happens under the hood — element type, mesh quality, convergence. If you are willing to invest that, you get control a commercial tool will not give you.
