PFLOTRAN is an open-source code for multiphase, multicomponent flow and reactive transport in porous media, developed jointly by US Department of Energy national laboratories. Built on the PETSc library, it runs on anything from a laptop to supercomputers with thousands of cores. It is used for contaminant plumes and aquifer remediation, geological CO2 storage, radioactive-waste repositories and geothermal systems. Suited to advanced hydrogeologists, environmental engineers and reservoir engineers. Limitations: there is no graphical interface and no ready installer, so it must be compiled together with PETSc; on Windows, installation through WSL is recommended; the learning curve is steep.
