Everything — The Complete Guide: Instant File Search by Name Across Your Whole PC

Everything from voidtools is a Windows tool for searching files and folders by name. It builds an index of your drives, shows results as you type and updates in real time. In project folders with tens of thousands of files, it finds the right drawing or calculation sheet in a second.

What you get

Tip: finding the latest revision

If files follow a fixed naming convention — project number, sheet number and revision — type the fixed part and sort by date modified, and the latest revision comes first. Search focuses on file names rather than their contents. Licence: free for any use, including commercial; the official licence file uses MIT wording, but the source code is not published — so this is freeware, not open source.

Related tools

To search inside file contents — grepWin. To find out what takes up disk space — WizTree. For a two-pane file manager — Double Commander.

The bottom line

Everything is one of the small tools that save the most time in an office — free, light and very fast.
