FLORIS — The Complete Guide: Wind-Farm Wake and Yield Modelling in Python

FLORIS is an open-source Python library developed at NREL, now the National Laboratory of the Rockies. It addresses a key question in wind-farm design: how much energy turbines lose when they stand in the aerodynamic shadow (wake) of other turbines. Instead of heavy CFD it uses fast engineering models, so thousands of cases can be run in minutes. The licence is BSD 3-Clause and allows any use, including commercial work.

What you get

Who it suits

Wind-energy engineers, wind-farm planners and control researchers who are comfortable working in code. There is no graphical interface, and everything is done in Python scripts. The models are steady-state, so final verification still needs CFD or field measurements.

The bottom line

FLORIS is a fast, completely free research tool for wind-farm wake and yield analysis, for those who work comfortably in Python.
