Ghostscript is a PostScript and PDF interpreter that many programs use behind the scenes. From the command line you can compress a heavy PDF of scanned drawings, convert to PDF/A for archiving, render pages to PNG or TIFF images, combine files, convert PostScript to PDF and rewrite problem files. It is also a required component for some virtual PDF printers on Windows. Limitation: there is no GUI, and the many parameters require reading the documentation.
