PlatformIO is a build and project management system for embedded software that plugs into VS Code as an extension or works from the command line. You define the board, framework (Arduino, ESP-IDF, Zephyr, STM32Cube and others) and libraries in one file, and the tool downloads compilers and dependencies by itself. It has a unified debugger, unit testing, static code analysis and CI integration. It suits engineers moving from the Arduino IDE to larger projects with version control and teamwork. Limitation: initial setup and project structure are more involved than in the Arduino IDE.
