Vim
Vim project (Bram Moolenaar, now maintained by Christian Brabandt and contributors)
Vim is a modal text editor in which you switch between a command mode and an insert mode, editing text with short keyboard commands and no mouse. It is present on almost every Linux server and on macOS, which makes it the natural tool for editing config files, scripts and input files of calculation programs on a remote machine. It includes syntax highlighting, recorded macros, regex find and replace, file comparison and a plugin system, and there is a gVim graphical interface for Windows. Limitation: learning the commands takes time, and for an occasional user it is less convenient than a regular editor.
