LyX — The Complete Guide: Writing Theses and Technical Reports With Equations, Free

LyX is a free document processor built on LaTeX, the typesetting system in which most papers and theses in science and engineering are written. The difference: in LyX you work in a graphical interface, see the structure and the equations on screen, and do not have to memorise commands.

Why not just Word?

Installation

On Windows, the LyX installer also downloads and configures a LaTeX distribution (MiKTeX). On macOS install MacTeX, and on Linux install TeX Live from the repositories. Then open Help → Tutorial, which teaches the basics in an hour.

Other languages

LyX supports right-to-left writing and mixing languages in the same sentence. Set the document language and produce the PDF with XeTeX or LuaTeX and a suitable font. Start from an existing template and check the settings once.

Alternatives

If you would rather write code directly and quickly, choose Typst, a modern typesetting system with simpler syntax than LaTeX. GNU TeXmacs has a full WYSIWYG editor and direct links to computer-algebra programs. For reports that mix code and results — Quarto.

The bottom line

For a final project, a thesis or a long technical report with equations, LyX gives LaTeX-quality output without the LaTeX learning curve. Completely free and available for every operating system.
