LibreOffice for Engineers — The Complete Guide: Calc, Solver and Technical Reports for Free

LibreOffice is an open-source office suite, completely free even for commercial use, with a word processor (Writer), a spreadsheet (Calc), presentations (Impress), drawing (Draw) and an equation editor (Math). For most of an engineer's office work — calculation sheets, reports, specifications and bills of quantities — it is entirely sufficient, with no annual subscription.

Calc for engineering calculation sheets

Writer for reports and specifications

Writer handles long documents well: heading styles, automatic numbering, tables of contents, figure captions and cross-references. Equations are written in the Math editor, and PDF export includes bookmarks, accessibility tags and a PDF/A option for archiving. Right-to-left languages are fully supported.

Compatibility with Office files

docx and xlsx files open and save without problems in most cases. Differences can appear in VBA macros, in sheets that depend on special add-ins and in documents with very complex layouts. When sending a document to a client who works in Office, check the final file once, or send a PDF.

When to use something else

When a calculation turns into long code or heavy data analysis, move to Python or GNU Octave. For reports with many equations and scientific references, LyX or Typst give a tidier result, and Zotero plugs into Writer for reference management.

The bottom line

LibreOffice will not replace every workflow built on years of Excel macros, but for a small engineering office, for students and for everyday calculation sheets it is a full, free alternative with no time limit and no account.
