MarkItDown — The Complete Guide: Turning Word, Excel and PDF into Clean Markdown Text

MarkItDown is an open-source Microsoft tool under the MIT licence that converts many file types into tidy Markdown text. You install it with pip (Python 3.10 or later is required) and run it from the command line or inside a script.

What you get

Why it is useful to an engineer

Its main purpose is preparing documents for AI models and search, but it is also useful for pulling tables out of a specification or spreadsheet into text whose versions you can compare in a version control system. Limitation: there is no graphical interface, and the output is meant for reading and processing, not for faithfully reproducing the original layout.

Related tools

For the opposite direction, from Markdown to formatted Word or PDF — Pandoc. For extracting structure and tables from complex PDFs — Docling. For scanned PDFs that first need text recognition — OCRmyPDF.

The bottom line

A small, fast tool for turning a pile of documents into clean text you can search, compare and feed to a language model. For anyone who works in Python, it is a one-liner.
