MeshLab — The Complete Guide: Free Processing and Repair of 3D Meshes and Scans

MeshLab is an open-source tool for processing 3D triangle meshes, developed at the ISTI-CNR institute in Italy. It is a “toolbox” for everything between a scan or photogrammetry and a clean, usable model.

What it is used for

MeshLab or CloudCompare?

CloudCompare is stronger with clouds of millions of points, comparing scans and measuring deviations from design. MeshLab is stronger at working on the mesh itself — repair, simplification and surface reconstruction. In practice people use both.

A typical workflow

Drone or camera photos → a model in Meshroom or WebODM → cleaning and simplification in MeshLab → rendering in Blender or printing through Cura.

The bottom line

MeshLab is an essential tool for anyone working with 3D scans, photogrammetry or 3D printing. The interface is technical, but the capabilities match commercial software — completely free.
