Proton Pass — The Complete Guide: Encrypted Passwords and Email Aliases That Hide Your Address

Proton Pass is the password manager from Proton, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail. All data is encrypted on the device before it is synced. There are apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and Brave, a web version and mobile apps.

What you get

What is free and what is paid

The free plan has no time limit: unlimited passwords and devices, two vaults, 10 email aliases and vault sharing with two people. A 2FA code generator, file attachments, unlimited aliases and emergency access require paid Pass Plus. A Proton account is required. Security tip: do not keep the 2FA codes for your most important accounts in the same vault as their passwords — a separate authenticator app keeps the two factors truly separate.

Related tools

For an open-source alternative with self-hosting — Bitwarden. For free two-factor codes from the same company — Proton Authenticator. For a local vault with no account — KeePassXC.

The bottom line

A good choice for anyone already using Proton or wanting less spam through aliases. The free plan is enough for most personal users.
