FreeFEM

In FreeFEM you write the weak form of the equation in a short dedicated language, and the system builds the mesh, assembles the matrices and solves. That turns problems with no ready-made solver — coupling between physical domains, non-standard boundary conditions, a new formulation — into tens of lines of code rather than a programming project.

It covers elasticity, flow, heat, electromagnetics and coupled problems, in 2D and 3D, with adaptive meshing and parallel execution. It is used mainly in research and theses rather than in office work.

What is missing: there is no graphical model builder. Anyone wanting to draw geometry will prefer PrePoMax or Salome.
