HYDRUS-1D solves the Richards equation for saturated-unsaturated flow and the advection-dispersion equations for solutes and heat in a one-dimensional soil profile. You can define layered soils, atmospheric boundaries of rain and evaporation, free drainage and root water uptake, and for solutes also sorption, degradation and decay chains. It is used to assess seepage from infiltration basins, leaching of fertilisers and contaminants to groundwater, irrigation and soil remediation, with graphical profile editing and result plots. Limitation: it stays available as is but is no longer developed; development moved to the commercial HYDRUS 5.
