LICEcap opens a transparent frame on the screen, and whatever happens inside it is saved directly as an animated GIF, with no conversion step. You can move the frame while recording, pause and resume with a hotkey, add a title frame with text, and cap the frame rate to save CPU and file size. It is especially suited to a short demonstration of a software action embedded in an email, a guidance document or a bug ticket. Limitations: no audio, no frame editing, and colour quality is limited by the GIF format itself.
