A computer algebra system: solving equations analytically, differentiation and integration, expression simplification, matrices and series — the part where you want a formula rather than a number. For an engineer that is useful when developing a design expression, checking the derivation of a formula from a code, or producing a closed-form expression for a spreadsheet. The wxMaxima interface is comfortable enough to work in.
