smartmontools

smartmontools contains two tools: smartctl reads a drive’s S.M.A.R.T. data, runs self-tests and shows the error log, and smartd runs as a background service, checks the drives on a schedule and sends an alert when something degrades. It is the engine many graphical tools rely on, and it suits a file server, NAS or compute workstation that runs for days, because it fits into scripts and monitoring systems. It runs on Linux, Windows, macOS and BSD. Limitation: there is no graphical interface, so ordinary users are better served by GSmartControl.
