VLC plays almost any video and audio file, including MKV, MP4 and MOV, discs and network streams, without installing extra codecs. For an engineer it is useful for viewing recordings from security cameras, drones or test equipment in unusual formats, slow or frame-by-frame playback for motion analysis, grabbing a frame as an image, and quick conversion of a single file to another format through the Convert/Save menu. Limitations: conversion is basic, with no convenient batch processing and less control over settings than HandBrake, and there are no editing tools.
