Thonny — The Complete Guide: A Simple Free Python Environment for Beginners and Engineering Students

Thonny was developed at the University of Tartu in Estonia and is open source (MIT). It is aimed at people writing their first lines of Python — a first-year student or an engineer who finally wants to automate a calculation — and removes almost every installation hurdle.

What you get

When to move on

As projects grow, move to Spyder for MATLAB-style scientific work, or to VSCodium for multi-file projects. The code itself carries over as it is.

Related tools

For the language and libraries — Python. For notebooks with plots and explanations — JupyterLab. For Arduino boards — Arduino IDE.

The bottom line

Thonny is the easiest way to start programming in engineering: install, write and run — on the same day.
