Spyder — The Complete Guide: A MATLAB-Style Python Environment for Engineers, Free

Spyder is a free development environment for Python, built specifically for scientific and engineering work. Anyone who has used MATLAB will recognise the layout at once: a code editor, a variable pane, an interactive console and a plots pane — all on one screen.

What you get

Installation

The simplest route is the standalone installer from the official site, which comes with Python and the main scientific libraries: NumPy, SciPy, pandas and matplotlib. You can also install it through conda-forge or pip into an existing Python environment.

Moving from MATLAB

Most MATLAB functions exist in NumPy and SciPy under similar names: linspace, zeros, linalg.solve, integrate.solve_ivp instead of ode45, and matplotlib instead of plot. The main differences: indexing starts at 0, and matrix multiplication is written @. If you want syntax almost identical to MATLAB, use GNU Octave.

Spyder or JupyterLab?

Spyder suits scripts and programs you run again and again, and people used to the MATLAB environment. JupyterLab is better for documented calculations with explanations and for sharing. Many people use both. For complete programming beginners, Thonny is simpler.

The bottom line

Spyder is the most comfortable bridge from MATLAB to Python: the same way of working, no licence, and the whole Python ecosystem. Completely free, including for commercial use.
