DaVinci Resolve — The Complete Guide: Studio-Grade Editing, Colour and Audio in the Free Edition

DaVinci Resolve from Blackmagic Design is a professional video editor also used in film and television production. It comes as a very generous free edition and a paid Studio edition. For an engineer it fits when a training video, test documentation or project presentation video really needs to look polished.

What you get

What is free and what is paid

The free edition may also be used for commercial work (per Blackmagic support on the official forum) and handles 8-bit formats, up to 60 fps and up to Ultra HD resolution. The Studio edition, a one-off purchase, adds 10-bit, 120 fps, resolutions beyond 4K, AI tools and noise reduction. A Studio-only effect applied in the free edition renders with a watermark. Mind the hardware demands too: without a strong graphics card the work is slow, and the learning curve is steep.

Related tools

For a full open-source editor with no edition limits at all — Kdenlive. For a lighter editor that also runs on a modest computer — Shotcut. For converting and compressing the result for sending — HandBrake.

The bottom line

With a strong computer and patience to learn, the free edition of Resolve is probably the most powerful free editor there is, and most engineering work never needs Studio.
