Hugin — The Complete Guide: Stitching Panoramas of Facades, Bridges and Construction Sites

Hugin is a long-established panorama stitcher: it finds common points in a series of overlapping photos, aligns them, corrects lens distortion and perspective, and blends the seams with Enblend. The result is one wide image of a structure that would not fit in a single frame.

What you get

A tip for shooting on site

Shoot with about one third overlap between frames, at fixed exposure and focus, and rotate the camera around the lens rather than the body — this reduces parallax errors. Remember that a panorama is geometrically distorted and is no substitute for measurement. Limitation: the interface is technical; the official macOS build is old and does not run on Apple Silicon, and on Linux it is installed from distribution repositories.

Related tools

For developing RAW files before stitching — darktable. For scientific image analysis — Fiji (ImageJ). For editing after stitching — GIMP.

The bottom line

The professional free tool for documentation panoramas — it takes patience at first, but gives full control over the result.
