IDAES — The Complete Guide: Modelling and Optimising Processes and Energy Systems

IDAES is a Python platform for multi-scale modelling and optimisation of processes and energy systems, developed under the lead of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories and academic partners. You build a flowsheet from unit models and property packages, and solve it all as one equation system.

What you get

Who it suits

Process engineers and researchers working on power plants, carbon capture and chemical processes who want real optimisation, not just simulation. There is no graphical interface — work is done in notebooks and code. It is licensed under BSD-3-Clause, commercial use included.

Related tools

For the modelling language IDAES is built on — Pyomo. For a process simulator with a graphical interface — DWSIM. For a CAPE-OPEN flowsheeting environment — COCO.

The bottom line

IDAES is a serious tool for anyone who needs open-source process optimisation — it requires Python skills, but gives full control over the model.
