nanoCAD Free — The Complete Guide: DWG Drafting in an AutoCAD-Like Interface, and What to Check in the Licence

nanoCAD Free from Nanosoft is a 2D drafting program that works directly in DWG files with an interface AutoCAD users recognise at once: a command line, layers, dimensions, blocks and sheet plotting. It runs on Windows and suits opening and fixing drawings and drafting details.

What you get

Limitations and licence

It is an old release, English only and without updates: it supports DWG files up to version 2013 and cannot open 2018-format files, which are most of the files you receive today. The vendor does not guarantee Windows 10 and 11 compatibility. Free registration is required, the licence is renewed each year and activates on one computer. The product page says it is intended for non-commercial use, although a vendor support article says otherwise — before using it on paid work, get confirmation from the vendor.

Related tools

For open-source 2D drafting free for any use — LibreCAD or QCAD. For viewing current DWG files — DWG TrueView.

The bottom line

A familiar AutoCAD feel for free, but in an old release with limited DWG compatibility and a non-commercial licence. Fine for learning and private use; for everyday work choose a current tool.
