Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is where free tools pay off fastest, because so much of the work is interim checking: sizing a beam before you build the full model, checking a drainage route, calculating an anchor for a connection in the field. None of that justifies a licence costing thousands a year.

The tools here fall into three families. Structural analysis — from simple frame solvers up to research-grade nonlinear and dynamic codes. Drafting and modelling — 2D drafting, parametric modelling and BIM. Water and soil — hydrological and hydraulic models that are the de-facto world standard and are distributed free by US federal agencies.

Check two things before you commit: whether the tool works to the code you actually submit under — many free packages are built around Eurocode or US standards — and whether you need a calculation report or just a number. Not every free tool produces something you can attach to a submission.
