The water distribution model and the urban drainage model from the Environmental Protection Agency are distributed free with source code, and they are the engine underneath most commercial software in the field — not a cut-down version, but exactly the same calculation.
Alongside them are hydraulic models for rivers and channels, rainfall-runoff hydrological models, and tools for spatial analysis of catchments and topography. Several of these are used in Israel in practice for drainage design and floodplain mapping.
One warning repeats on every record on this page: these tools are built around US data, units and standards. The hydraulic engine is valid anywhere, but rainfall curves, runoff coefficients and regulatory requirements are local and must be entered to the applicable national code.
